ON “NEEDING”

A typical tumblr comment to a new toy/device/clothinh/whathaveyou is “I NEED THIS!”  or  “WANT.”  I’m guilty of this and 99% of the time I have the funds to purchase whatever thing I’m commenting on, but I never do.   Why?  Because in the end, do i really need those Zombie splatter bed sheets?  No.  It’s pretty dumb if you think about it.  I’m an adult, and even though I live in the epicenter of hipster-dom, (Billyburg, brooklyn) I no longer crave cool.

The thing that really made me think about this was walking down Graham Ave last week and a guy walked by me in one of those knit winter hats with the beard attached.  I’ve always loved how they looked online, and if you dug deep enough into my tumblr you’d find a picture of it and me commenting “Ohh, want so bad!  buying now!” etc.

The guy wearing it looked like a total tool and the hat/beard combo didn’t look cool at all.  He became “that guy.”  “OMG, thats the guy who totally bought that thing.  Douche.”

Seeing him made me feel so much better that i never bought it, because I would be too embarrassed to wear it.  It would’ve become a trinket.  Something i wore in my apartment to take a witty facebook picture.  Not used for its purpose.  An ironic thing.

Imma think about that beard whenever I see something cool yet stupid online…maybe those things just have to live online, and not in my possesion.  I’m done “Needing it” or “wanting it,”  I feel much better just bloggin it.
